Full of the usual boogie, Historical Figures and Ancient Heads still comes off as a rather pale reminder of just how bluesy this band once was. New blood or not, this disc didn't do much in the way of revitalizing Canned Heat's faltering career - they appear to have become old before their time.

Canned Heat's first album without Wilson was, by all means, a disaster - a band that struggled plenty while its top songwriter and (arguably) most charismatic member was alive had little choice but to flounder when he was dead. As the matter stands, Historical Figures And Ancient Heads really does turn Canned Heat into what it states it is - an unhappy, but probably inevitable development. Get the Charles Lloyd track for a good experience, and thumbs down for the rest.

It was the first album not to feature original member and songwriter Alan Wilson who had died the previous year. Featuring new guitarman Joel Scott Hill and Little Richard on Rockin’ WIth The King. The record also includes Tony de la Barreda on bass, who left with Hill after this album and subsequent tour. Sneakin' Around" (Jessie Mae Robinson) – 4:53. Hill's Stomp" (Joel Scott Hill) – 3:03. Rockin' With the King" (Skip Taylor, Richard Wayne Penniman) – 3:17. I Don't Care What You Tell Me" (Charles Lloyd) – 3:58.

Canned Heat became one of the most popular American bands of the early 70s, combining a genuine feeling for the blues whilst also being commercially successful with a string of memorable hit singles. Founder members Bob Hite, Al Blind Owl Wilson and Henry Vestine are all now dead, but their spirit lives on in recordings like this classic 1972 release, packed with excellent material, from boogie to the blues. Adding Joel Scott Hill to the band, Canned Heat was infused with a bit of much-needed new blood. While nothing here found favor with AM radio, FM saw fit to include such cuts as "Cherokee Dance," "Utah," and the Heat's collaboration with Little Richard, "Rockin' with the King. Full of the usual boogie, Historical.
