It's a sensation borne out by the rest of What Did You Expect from the Vaccines? – a title that rather prompts the answer: I'm not sure, but it certainly wasn't an album that sounds like dimly remembered Bristolian shamblers the Groove Farm. Comparisons have been drawn to the Strokes, but the Vaccines really recall rigorously unfunky, pre-Madchester indie. But in the post-Britpop world, that's no longer the way: the overriding impression left by What Did You Expect from the Vaccines? is of a first effort by a fairly good indie band boosted far out of their league by an overexcited music press.

What Did You Expect from The Vaccines? (2011), Come of Age (2012), English Graffiti (2015) and Combat Sports (2018). They have sold nearly 2 million records worldwide In Autumn 2011, the band was forced to postpone tours of Japan and the US, in addition to shows across Europe, after Young suffered from a recurring vocal issue that had led to three operations within a nine-month period.
The album of the year. At first they seemed like a la-di-da-di-da band. What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? Everything. The album of the year. I heard the demo version of 'If You Wanna' a few months after the band was formed and I heard potential. Wreckin' Bar (ra ra ra)" is the brilliantly unabated surge of magically dumb garage rock we'd been warned to expect. Much of the rest is a collection of mainly dull mid tempo effigies of other bands influences.
There’s something strangely fresh about The Vaccines. Strange because their sound owes so much to post punk, Madchester and Britpop that their debut album ‘What Did You Expect From The Vaccines"’ would seem equally suited to being released in any of the previous 3 decades. Yet this is a guitar-laden album with a confidence and honesty that is pleasing amid recent years where guitar bands have gone a bit stale. The 3rd placed contestants in the BBC’s Sound of 2011 have a sound more reflective of 1991, but it is this that is so refreshing amid an age of synths and sub woofers.

Britain’s Vaccines hit in a big way across the pond with their singles-laden debut, What Did You Expect From the Vaccines? Their brand of post-punk-rooted commercial rock fits in nicely with bands like the Strokes and Arctic Monkeys, though the Vaccines’ occasional foray into a big, fist-pumping guitar sound ( All In White, Post Break-Up Sex ), might put off some stalwart indie-rockers. But the Vaccines have enough scruffy edge and reverb to work their charms on fans of, say, No Age or Male Bonding, and those songs present the band at their best
The Vaccines are at their best when they're upbeat, flecked with surf, and surprisingly hard to get out of your head. Much of, if not all of What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? suffers from a complete lack of intelligence, candidness or originality: elements that help make guitar-based music interesting.
