Ibrahim Maalouf: Diasporas by Chris May, published on November 28, 2010. Diasporas was Maalouf's debut album, and was originally released on his own Mi'ster Productions label in 2007. It's been followed by Diachronism (Mi'ster, 2009), which inhabits similar territory but spread over two discs. Diasporas, pithier and more rigorous, is the more enjoyable of the two albums and its release into the wider European marketplace is a welcome development. Maalouf's ace up the sleeve is his use of an unusual four-valve trumpet invented by his father, Nassim Maalouf, in the 1960s
Ibrahim Maalouf (Arabic: ابراهيم معلوف; born 5 December 1980) is a French-Lebanese jazz trumpeter and composer. His father is trumpeter Nassim Maalouf and his mother is pianist Nada Maalouf. His uncle is the writer Amin Maalouf and his grandfather was the journalist, poet, and musicologist Rushdi Maalouf. After leaving his home country as a child during the Lebanese Civil War, he grew up in Paris with his sister Layla
Lebanese/French trumpeter Maalouf uses a quartertone instrument invented by his father to create impressively wobbly, Arabic-sounding departures from the well-tempered scale. Though one is invited to read a post-colonial perspective into his version of "Night in Tunisia" (called "Missin' Ya") as well as the album's title, intersecting found-sound atmospheres and gratuitous oud solos, they can also seem a little too last century, like "Karmacoma"-style trip-hop beats.
