Dockings is a Contemporary Jazz by Michel Portal - Music Sense is news, music, lyrics, video from show business and a lot more about singers, bands and musicians from all the international.
Jazz aficionados have the opportunity to discover another side of Michel Portal, who is also a composer of soundtracks. With Musiques de Cinemas, he decided to revisit some of the themes he wrote for movies and a famous French TV show with an explicit and ambitious objective in mind. For these new readings, he convened with mostly jazz musicians and approached the themes with a jazz outlook without turning them into jazz songs.

Michel Portal (born 27 November 1935) is a French composer, saxophonist, and clarinetist. He plays both jazz and classical music and is considered to be "one of the architects of modern European jazz". Portal was born in Bayonne on 27 November 1935. His family was musical and there were several instruments in his house when he was growing up. His interest in jazz began after hearing it on the radio after World War II. He studied clarinet at the Conservatoire de Paris and conducting with Pierre Dervaux.
In 1970, Portal developed a fruitful collaboration with John Surman. The following year, he created the long-lived Michel Portal Unit, a structure designed to have European and American musicians meet in a freely improvised setting. In 1975, writing movie soundtracks became a regular activity, which is well-documented on Musiques de Cinémas. In the '80s and '90s, Portal went through countless new musical encounters, never following a plan and always seizing the moment. During that period, his most notable collaborators included Pierre Favre, Dave Liebman, Martial Solal, Mino Cinelu,.

Availability: Out of stock. The themes clearly reflect Portal's other musical interests and his acknowledged eclecticism. They also surely display enough harmonic and melodic qualities to be springboards for improvisation. Based on the mixed results, one is left wondering if Portal actually met his goal.
