Up until the release of 2011’s album Civilian, the indie rock duo of Wye Oak released two albums and one EP of solid, well-crafted indie rock. Built around the husky vocals and biting guitars of Jenn Wasner and the steady backbeat of Andy Stack, they trod upon familiar ground; writing mysterious and autumnal songs with a melancholy and intimate feel that had loud/quiet dynamics and a homemade sound. There's something natural about CIVILIAN, Wye Oak's third full-length album. Every song sounds effortless, but none of them sound simple. Every song sounds meticulous, but none of them sound busy. To my ears, it took Wye Oak three albums to hit their full stride. The first two albums had incredible moments, but would get a little drifty in stretches. This release is involving throughout and consistently surprises the listener with interesting and unusual sounds brought into the mix. Their sound has continue to evolve and develop from album to album to achieve greater depth in their music.
