Released in 2008, Trabajito de Chinos is the debut album from Spanish experimental artist La Shica. Combining traditional flamenco with pop and hip-hop, its 12 tracks include collaborations with Miguel Poveda ("Dos Carnes Paralelas") and Elbicho's Miguel Campello ("Vicio"), a cover version of Rafael DeLeon's "Maria de La O," and the single "Zingara Rapera.

La Shica's album attractively fuses contemporary styles, including hip-hop and funk, with flamenco flourishes - you could call it nu-flamenco. But she wears her inauthenticity lightly, making a product that sounds equally pleasant in the car, the restaurant or the personal stereo. Ojos de Brujo have worked this seam for a while, but their recent albums struggled to reproduce the incandescent energy of their live shows. La Shica is less ambitious, but she has made an accomplished and listenable world-music album.

Like any good new artist, La Shica pissed off the purists and both confused and attracted the hipsters. She started out as a flamenco dancer, but it didn't feel right, so she shaved her head and started rapping. But this isn't rap in the North American sense: She draws from the jaleo and recitao styles of flamenco, and she considers coplas singer Lola Flores the best rapper in history - hardly orthodox stuff.
