OS MUTANTES was a Brazilian band formed in the late sixties, pretty much influenced in the beginning by the BEATLES and by the Brazilian musical scene at the time (the movement called Tropicalia, which they participated then). In the beginning, the band was formed by Rita Lee (vocals and percussion), Sergio Dias (guitar and vocals) and his brother Arnaldo Baptista (bass, keyboards and vocals), with Ronaldo "Dinho" Leme on drums as invited musician. Their first album, untitled "Os Mutantes", was a break down in the Brazilian scene, since they brought with their music the experimentalism that was missing in our music.
One album into their career in 1969, Mutantes showed few signs of musical burnout after turning in one of the oddest LPs released in the '60s. Similar to its predecessor, Mutantes relies on an atmosphere of experimentation and continual musical collisions, walking a fine line between innovation and pointless genre exercises.
Mutantes Ao Vivo is the final Os Mutantes' album until the band's 2006 reunion at London's Barbican Theatre. Although the original line-up (Rita Lee, Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias; and later with Liminha and Dinho Leme) made the most notorious breakthrough for the group, it has gone through numerous personnel changes throughout its existence.
Os Mutantes is the debut eponymous album by the Brazilian tropicalia band. It was originally released in 1968 by Polydor and influenced by traditional Brazilian music styles, as well as American and British bands. The album includes a cover of The Mamas & The Papas' "Once Was a Time I Thought", translated into "Tempo no Tempo", and a cover of "Le premier bonheur du jour", previously recorded by Françoise Hardy.
Os Mutantes – Os Mutantes (1968) (Produced by Rogerio Duprat) The first Os Mutantes album, and probably the best. Begins with Panis et Circensis before heading into Minha Menina, quite simply one of the greatest pop songs ever written. Lively percussion, a ridiculously-loud fuzz guitar and a sing-along chorus of epic proportions makes it hard to resist.
