Mercury Rev’s sixth album Secret Migration is a high flying psychedelic concept record filled with paeans to Mother Nature. Singer Jonathan Donahue has never been so in touch with his inner hobbit as he is here. Dave Fridmann remains the band’s producer, which is excellent as he’s the most interesting part of the band, and a great deal of the reason that the band’s best album, ‘98’s Deserter’s Songs, is as good as it is.

What a long strange migration Mercury Rev’s has been. From the intemperate chaos of their early days to the dark power and elegance of their work since See You On The Other Side, few comparable cases of successful sonic metamorphosis exist in the past decade. If the album blasts off with the surging Secret for a Song – The Funny Bird revisited, or near enough – guitar power is thenceforth less paramount.

Like 'Deserter Songs' and 'All Is Dream' before, 'The Secret Migration' is a compelling, visual album.
