The opening "Observations" immediately features Ayers' rich distinctive voice, some modest changes of pace, and a decent guitar break. perhaps one of his most mis-understood albums. Without question this is a bizzarre album with very little continuity and does feel like it spans a wide range of themes, moods and ideas. the immediate and then at a depth that you wont get from many artists. you will hear lots of Pink Floyd mixed with Leonard Cohen.

Sweet Deceiver is the sixth studio album by Kevin Ayers and his last for Island Records. It is one of Ayers’ more rock-oriented productions, with the first side featuring the progressive material, while the second was more mainstream. Guitarist Ollie Halsall was now a key foil for Ayers and his playing on the opening track Observations is a clear demonstration of his dexterity.

Sweet Deceiver is one of Kevin Ayers' more mainstream efforts. Any album that has Elton John playing piano on a few tracks can't be too weird. That's not to say, though, that this is exactly mainstream in and of itself. Ayers continues to play his offhandedly charming miniatures, with occasional Caribbean rhythms and trademark droll, bemused lyrics.
