The Dark Discovery" is the debut full-length studio album by Swedish heavy/power metal act Evergrey and. The album was released through GNW Records in 1998. Evergrey was formed in 1995 in Gothenburg and on this album consists of Tom Englund (vocals, guitar), Dan Bronell (guitar), Daniel Nojd (bass), Will Chandra (keyboards), and Patrick Carlsson (drums). The Dark Discovery is undoubtedly an original album given its time period, and the band's and morose sound was a refreshing change of pace from the countless Dream Theater and Fates Warning clones that populated the prog metal scene in 1998. Most of the songs here linger in the four to five minute time frame, and these powerful and melodic mini-epics are all really well-composed and quite diverse.

Evergrey recorded their first album The Dark Discovery in 1996 a few months after forming as a band. They caught the ear of fellow Swede Andy LaRocque who brought them in to record their debut. Amazingly this album fits well into the sound/style that would define Evergrey. I say that because many bands sound more raw or trying to sound like another band on their debut. This CD is a bit rare to find these day's, but worth finding for hardcore Evergrey fan's that want to hear all their records.

The first album I picked up by Evergrey was "The Inner Circle," which, while a stellar and organic conceptual outing, was lacking dynamics in some respects. While the lyrical concept of the album, as with all Evergrey albums, was stellar and highly emotional, the group was totally refurbished following massive internal strife, and it's clear that Englund may have been having difficulty conveying the mass of his vision to his relatively new bandmates.

After a short hiatus the band returned with its ninth album Hymns for the Broken, released on September 2014. Evergrey's lyrics have always been of the darker sort, and the same can be said of the band's imagery.
