With KAJAK, Benni Hemm Hemm's second album, it seems as if he's taking a more thoughtful route, since "Skvavars" opens the album on a quieter note. But fear not, it quickly blossoms. The lyrics here are strictly Icelandic, as opposed to the melange of languages on their debut, but the spirit shines through with the glowing build of "Snjórljóssnjór" or the shifting time signatures of "Sorgartár." "Regngalsinn" takes a slower approach, as does the stately "Stoffer." Indeed, this album plays more with the dynamics, going with both softer and louder tones, whereas their earlier work seemed content with larger sounds. "Aldrei" has the slow drawl of a jazz funeral, while the drum roll of "Sex Eða Sjö" takes on a moodier edge. A much more complex work than their debut, and that much stronger for it.
