Gamelan Music of Bali's seven cuts capture the essence of Balinese gamelan music at its best. In short, it is a must have for anyone interested in the shimmering sounds of one of the world's finest and most highly regarded musical ensemble traditions.

Gamelan (/ˈɡæməlæn/) is the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments. The most common instruments used are metallophones played by mallets and a set of hand-played drums called kendhang which register the beat. Also the kemanak, a banana shaped idiophone and gangsa, another metallaphone are amongst the commonly used gamelan instruments.

Gamelan Music of Bali is a interesting cd because, this is the only album that I have heard that contains two orchestras that feature in this cd, the well known and popular gamelan gong kebyar or simply known as "kebyar" and also gamelan angklung kebyar. These two orchestras are in popular demand. The keybar style developed in the late 1900s after the Dutch take over of the island of Bali after the Puputan in 1906-1908. The word puputan means "the fight to the death" by the Rajas and their royal families.

Volume VIII Court Music Treasures. Collections of themed recordings curated by John Noise Manis. Court Music Treasures. Born in East Java, Bapak Sumarsam received formal gamelan education and grew up as musician in Surakarta (Central Java). He is Adjunct Professor and Chair of the Music Department at Wesleyan University (Middletown, Conn) and an internationally renowned gamelan musician. He conducts workshops and concerts throughout the world. On the other hand, most musicians of the present CDs are faculty members of the STSI (Institute of the Arts) in Solo. Notation takes an important role in their formal education. In much of today’s gamelan playing, it is not uncommon to see some musicians (including singers) using notation, even if only casually.
