Laurel Halo - Chance Of Rain (2013).
Electronic musican Laurel Halo's releases since 2012's Quarantine can be read as a reaction to that album and its reception, as she has steadily retreated from that album's vocally oriented post-pop into the harsh instrumental strictures of techno. Her second album, the dynamic, bracing Chance of Rain, continues this transition.
Chance of Rain is the second album by American electronic musician Laurel Halo, released in October 2013 on the Hyperdub label.
Chance Of Rain maintains the techno trajectory of Behind The Green Door, her EP for Hyperdub from earlier this year. Any fears that this approach has dampened her music's personality are eased by the piano keys and synth droplets on the first track, "Dr. Echt," a deft composition that leaves you wanting more. But the winsome mood is blown out of the water by the woodblock techno of "Oneiroi," which is busy and cluttered-one of those tracks that shouldn't work but really, really does . The album's cover art, which was drawn by Halo's father, gives the LP an intimate context. The image has no direct connection to the music (it was drawn in the '70s, before Halo was born) but it's intricate, strange and beautiful-much like the album itself. Published, Mon, 4 Nov 2013. Words, Aaron Coultate.

With Chance Of Rain, Laurel Halo makes another jump: a logical and mathematically sound one, but an abrasive and unilateral one, nonetheless. This album is founded on the grounds of her own kinship to her expressive self, borne from the live context. Having first performed these tracks as improvised pieces, molded from the moment in which they were birthed, she sculpted the parts to suit the particular situation of her performance and then reconfigured, re-appropriated them endlessly from show to show. The aim was to stabilize them, to freeze them in time and shape them in studio.
When I first listened to 'Chance of Rain', I obviously felt the total difference between the two albums.
Don’t be fooled by the genteel, dinner jazz-ish organ pieces that open and close ‘Chance of Rain’, the second album by Michigan-born experimental techno and ambient producer Laurel Halo. Those two bookends are pretty much the only time you’ll be kicking back on this deep journey into abstract electronica and twitchy soundscapes. We’ll be honest: ‘Chance of Rain’ is not an easy listen.
