L. Frank Baum's celebrated children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was first published in 1900 and became an immediate success. Soon after, Baum contracted to write the libretto for a stage musical adaptation of his book, which arrived on Broadway as The Wizard of Oz on January 20, 1903. It, too, was an immediate success. This album aims to remind listeners of what the first musical version sounded like. The job of assembling it wasn't easy. Recording was in a primitive state in 1903, and there was no such thing as an "original cast" recording.

In 1940, Decca released a set of 4, 10-inch, 78rpm records featuring songs from The Wizard of Oz. Although the set claims to be an "Original Cast Album", the songs were not, in fact, the versions used in the movie itself. In anticipation of the film's release, Decca had Judy Garland record "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "The Jitterbug" for a single release.
