Grande messe des morts, Op. 75 "Requiem": XI. Agnus Dei (Live). Dimitri Mitropoulos avoids all overlush sonorities in his interpretation of Berlioz’s sombre yet powerfully apocalyptic piece, bringing subtle colour to the playing of the Vienna Philharmonic and demanding from the chorus of the Vienna State Opera the whole dynamic range and vocal intensity that this magnificent ensemble has to offer – its resources are seemingly boundless. The result is a musical event of avant-gardist elegance. Recorded 15 August 1956.
