The Schumann songs include a number of rarities (an additional merit of this album). The hauntingly beautiful Lenau songs op. 90 for instance, complete with the Requiem (is the "Requiem" corny? If so, what difference does it make?). There are also moments of light relief, like the graceful, tongue-in-cheek "Provenzalisches Lied", and there is the wonderful Byron setting "Aus den hebräischen Gesängen", perhaps the finest of this selection of Schumann songs. This impression continued on CD 2, which starts with six wonderfully performed Mörike settings by Hugo Wolf, including the magical "An eine Äolsharfe" and the bitingly funny "Abschied". The rest of CD 2 is devoted to French mélodies. Barry McDaniel approaches these songs (which most German singers of that time tended to avoid) with fine musicianship, flawless French diction and a great sense of style.
Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite for solo piano by Maurice Ravel, composed between 1914 and 1917, in six movements based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I. Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements.

Fritz Wunderlich: Schumann: Dichterliebe, Schubert, Beethoven Lieder (Deutsche Grammophon). Dietrich Fischer-Dieskeau: Schubert: Schwanengesang (EMI Classics). Dietrich Fischer-Dieskeau: Schubert: Winterreise (EMI Classics). Most of the material is by Schubert who is the undoubted king of lieder. There are two song cycles by Schubert, one by Schumann, 31 of Schubert's most famous individual lieder, and 5 Beethoven lieder. There is some duplication of lieder but not much. This is in terms of material and singers.
