Bown then formed The Alan Bown Set in c May 1965, initially with three former members of The John Barry Seven :- Jeff Bannister (lead vocals and organ) (born Jeffrey Bannister, 7 January 1943), Dave Green (sax, clarinet and flute) and Stan Haldane (bass) together with Pete Burgess (guitar) and Vic Sweeney (drums). This line up released 3 singles, none of which charted, although "Emergency 999" later became a Northern Soul club anthem. The Alan Bown Set and Jimmy James and the Vagabonds were both recorded live and released on a joint album London Swings: Live at the Marquee Club with one side each. Jess Roden on The Alan Bown.

The Alan Bown Set had one side of this LP, the other belonging to fellow British soul band Jimmy James & the Vagabonds. They had released studio versions of a couple of these ("Emergency 999" and "Headline News") on their mid-'60s Pye singles, but otherwise these marked the only time the Alan Bown Set recorded these tunes

The Alan Bown Set – a musically daring mix of horns and rock – was conceived in the Summer of 1965 by four former John Barry Seven members: Alan Bown (trumpet); Dave Green (saxophone, flute); Jeff Bannister (organ, vocals); Stan Haldane (bass) together with Vic Sweeney (drums) and Pete Burgess (guitar). Their live performance was captured in the album, London Swings – Live at the Marquee Club, also featuring The Alan Bown Set. Jimmy James and the Vagabonds were labelmates and rivals of Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band. In April 2007, James performed at the 'Classic Gold Weekender' along with Marmalade, Love Affair and Showaddywaddy In February 2014, the song "Whatever You Need", written by drummer Russ Courtenay and Harriet Roberts featured on Tina Turner's album, Love Songs.
