Maximum Balloon is the perfect name for producer/TV on the Radio member David Sitek's collaborative side project: it’s bigger, lighter, and more playful-sounding than any of the music he’s made before - and it also goes pop. Indie music fans know Sitek's dense, detailed sound, which he’s tailored to work with artists such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, Telepathe, Scarlett Johansson, and, of course, TVOTR. However, he shows just how versatile his music can be here by bringing in friends to sing on tracks tailor-made for them

Maximum Balloon is TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek but, strictly speaking, it is not a Dave Sitek solo project. Sure, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Scarlett Johansson producer is pulling all the strings (as he seems to do on many albums he produces), but the debut from this project is less a chance for him to take centerstage as it is an opportunity to color outside the lines required by his day jobs  . Despite being the work of a star producer, the rotating vocalists make the album feel relaxed and loose, with each guest shading the record in subtle new ways. Soulful Brooklyn rapper Theophilus London brings sex appeal to his neon-disco opener.

80. Maximum Balloon isn't intended to carry the emotional and cultural weight of a TV On The Radio release, but it's a charming diversion that bodes well for Dear Science's follow-up, not to mention whichever artist is smart enough to hire Sitek as their producer next.

With an overriding electro-pop feel to the album, Maximum Balloon is rather like a straight faced version of Gorillaz. There's little in the way of humour to be found in the fat grooves and swelling synths of the album and the vocalists themselves are rarely outside of the comfort zone.
