Wolfgang Rihm (Ulf Hoelscher & Siegfried Mauser), Phantom & Escapade - Works for Violin & Piano.

As generally defined, phantom and escapade are commonly understood terms. Perhaps Wolfgang Rihm was honing them somewhat finer when he chose them for the title of this comp. Ulf Hoelscher (born 17 January 1942 in Kitzingen) is a German violinist. He has been soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. He has recorded numerous concertos by Schoeck, Beethoven, Berg, Bruch, Schumann, Spohr, Saint-Saëns, and Tchaikovsky. He teaches violin at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe and the Accademia di Cervo in Italy. He plays an 18th-century Guarneri violin.

This also works for violin and piano by Wolfgang Rihm, the Hoelscher has recorded with pianist Siegfried Mauser published. With Heinrich Schiff and Christian Zacharias Hoelscher made temporarily a successful trio - documented in a recording of the Brahms Trio in B Major and Tripelkonzertes of Beethoven. He has performed in major chamber music instrumentation with Ulf Hoelscher the ensemble with a first authorized performance and recording of the Octet by Max Bruch was much talked about. Ensemble Ulf Hoelscher ( Ulf Hoelscher, violin; Nachum Erlich, violin; Karl -Heinz Schultz, violin; Ingo de Haas, violin; Jörg- Wolfgang Jahn, viola; Madeline Prager, Viola; Christian Euler, Viola, Martin Ostertag, violoncello; Wolfgang Güttler, bass, Ian Fountain, piano): CPO 999422-2. Benjamin Frankel, violin concerto.

Rihm: Violin Sonata; Hekton; Antlitz; Phantom und Eskapade: Hoelscher/ Mauser. Antlitz and the "piece fantasies" Phantom und Eskapade date from the 1990s and represent the mature Rihm, a composer confidently revelling in his compositional freedom while respecting the obligation to be faithful to his musical material. What all the pieces have in common, though, is a unswerving concentration on expressive essences; that is as true of the fiercely declamatory solo with which the Sonata opens as it is of the chilly, interior world inhabited by Antlitz, or the more protean, discursory forays of Phantom und Eskapade

The gorgeous voice of Christoph Prégardien graces this album of contemporary works by Wolfgang Rihm, accompanied by the gifted Siegfried Mauser on piano. It is a most unusual, unique album of 20th and 21st century lieder, where the text has a particular emphasis in the creation of the music (the liner notes go into detail on this point). From the start of the song cycle Ende der Handschrift, Prégardien's baritone-like tenor shines with its clean, well-placed sound.

Wolfgang Rihm Composer. Siegfried Mauser (pf). Wolfgang Rihm Composer. Phantom und Eskapade. The liner-notes point out Rihm’s fondness for analogies with drawing and painting; Antlitz bears the subtitle ‘Drawing for Violin and Piano’, and without wishing to take the composer too literally there is often a feeling of doodling; if that seems a double-edged characterisation, its precise interpretation will doubtless vary from listener to listener. What is beyond question is the commitment of the performances
