Naysayer EP. While perhaps not as well-known as the scenes in New York, Washington . and Boston, Seattle has long had a fertile and innovative hardcore movement. Drawing their members from the ranks of Botch, Himsa, Undertow, Jough Dawn Baker, Harbinger and Pistols At Dusk, Heiress are the latest beast to kick their way out of that scene, and these two tracks demand that fans of heavy music pay attention. But the flipside of this 7-inch, Just Throats, makes the biggest impression: Slow and discordant, shades of Neurosis insinuate through the track, and there is something desolate infusing both the music and the roaring, elongated vocals of John Pettibone (ex-Himsa). Pettibone has never sounded closer to the edge as he does here; it’s as if he’s desperate to get these words out and drawing upon all of his strength to do so.

Naysayer b/w Just Throats" features two brand new exclusive Heiress songs and picks up where their split with Narrows left off. Both songs are grim, dark, and ominous post everything musical explorations. Naysayer" falls into a downward spiral of aggressive percussion before plodding forth with a warhorse like pace. While the b-side "Just Throats" navigates emotionally melodic waters, showing the sonic diversity that is Heiress at their most powerful. There's no question, "Naysayer b/w Just Throats" is a stunning release

"Naysayer" begins this excellent 7-inch from Heiress with a satisfyingly heavy, driving momentum that'll have you moshing at your turntable in seconds. Vocalist John Pettibone (famously of Undertow) is an accomplished lyricist; flipping over the EP, you'll read these cryptic lines to "Naysayer": "Heat seeker of lost cause/violent verse, purist to the veil." The track on the B-side, "Just Throats," explores the quieter, more contemplative side of this Seattle band, which adds a depth to their sound that many other metallic post-hardcore bands lack. "The sin is never enough," John bellows amidst ringing guitar notes. Demian Johnston, an artist and musician of high stature in the Northwest, created the artwork for this 7-inch. In an age of soulless, computer-generated art, his hand-drawn attention to craft and minor detail is both refreshing as well as visually appealing. Beholding Demian's art on the physical EP is almost worth the purchase price alone, but the handwritten lyrics on the back tip the scales from "I'll just download it" to "I have to buy that 7-inch"! This clear vinyl version is from the first press and is easily obtainable online at the Deathwish Inc. Estore (with a complimentary download included). Unfortunately, Heiress don't tour much, but if you ever have the opportunity to catch them live, don't pass it up. One of their guitarists, Wes Reed, can be seen in studious concentration as he perfectly recreates his recorded parts live. Pettibone delivers his impressionistic lyrics with conviction and passion, which only serves to reinforce that Heiress are a supremely talented (albeit underrated) modern metallic hardcore band who aren't afraid to stretch the artistic boundaries of a sometimes middling genre.
