There are only two real problems with the Pilot Knob EP: most striking is its unreliable vocal performance, and less problematic is the fact that it would have sounded far more interesting had it been released around 1992. The record's sound has the driving rock tendencies of Superchunk or the Chapel Hill indie scene, but with a hazy stew of effects overlying it that makes things sound like a more pop-oriented, American take on Ride's early recordings (Smile in particular).

Sixteen Deluxe is an alternative rock band from Austin, Texas. They were mainly active in the 1990s, recording initially for Butthole Surfers drummer King Coffey's Trance Syndicate label. They issued one album on Warner Bros. Records and several others on indie labels. Sixteen Deluxe disbanded in 2000, and re-formed in 2010. In March 1996, Sixteen Deluxe toured the United States opening for 7 Year Bitch. In spring 1996, the band recorded Pilot Knob EP with the members of Crust, with Hardy returning to the drum seat again after the departure of Rhodes prior to the recording. In October 1996, Sixteen Deluxe signed a two-record deal with Warner Bros. The band recorded their Warner's debut at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco during January and February 1997 with producer John Croslin, engineer Dave McNair, and new drummer Steven T. Hall.

Formed in April 1994, they quickly generated a heap of buzz in Austin, filling local clubs with a kinetic mix of sonic assault, pop melodies, smoke, lights, and film projections.

Pilot were a Scottish rock group, formed in 1973 in Edinburgh by David Paton and Billy Lyall. They are best known for their songs "Magic" and "January". Both Paton and Lyall had briefly been substitute members of the Bay City Rollers before that band's breakthrough. Joined by drummer Stuart Tosh, the band recorded several demos during 1972 and 1974. They were signed to a management contract with Nick Heath and Tim Heath, sons of British bandleader Ted Heath, and John Cavanagh.
