Mundanus Imperium initially started out in Hamar, Norway in late 1994, when Lars "Grond" Wiik (drums, bass, guitars and vocals) and Bent "Draug" Holm (synths), created the band Nattefall. In 1996 they recorded their first and only demo tape "Ode To The Nightsky". at X-Ray Studios that in May 1997 released as a MCD by Velvet Music. Their style is great atmospheric Black Metal in the vein of early Arcturus. The band agreed for the release knowing that this was a good opportunity. to promote their new band name Mundanus Imperium and also their new musical direction. Changing their style to Progressive Metal, they only released one album in 1998 before disbanding.
Among the smaller jewels of this style was Mundanus Imperium. A couple of years before they released their quite interesting full length album which sounded like a mixture between their original style, progressive metal and classic hard rock, there was this EP. A 16 minute trip into Nordic melancholy and longing. All the elements that a fan of this style would want to hear are present. First of all, a thick blanket of keyboards that seem to serve as the main source of composition. Adequate and moderately paced drums.
Ladies and gentlemen of Sputnik, Mundanus Imperium is one of those bands. A long disbanded Symphonic Black Metal outlet (with their second and last effort being a Power Metal record) Mundanus Imperium wish to take you on a journey to the darkest reaches of the cosmos through this EP. The first of the three songs 'Ode to the Night Sky' starts out straight forward enough. A catchy tremolo picked riff with some mid paced drumming usher you up before dying down for the vocals and drums, picking up speed again with the addition of the keyboards
