David Grubbs has had an astonishingly wide-ranging career: Squirrel Bait, Bastro, Bitch Magnet (fleetingly), the Red Krayola, Gastr del Sol, Palace, Boxhead Ensemble, & a series of solo recordings & collaborations. The common aspect among these performances is contigent on itself, as it is primarily identified by Grubbs' own commitment & growth as both instrumentalist & composer, constantly pursuing forms & structures that challenge both musician & listener.

David Grubbs teaches classes in creative writing, performance, music, and technology at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College, and before he arrived in New York 15 years ago, he lived and played in bands in Chicago. A Louisville native, he'd moved here in 1990 to attend grad school at the University of Chicago, but if you knew about him then, you probably knew him as a musician. David Grubbs plays solo at New York's Deitch Projects gallery, beneath Peter Coffin's 2008 work Untitled (Color Wheel). I guess I would say one of the defining characteristics of experimental music was that it couldn't adequately be represented as a record. That was a kind of badge of pride-that it couldn't be commodified in that way, it couldn't be sold in that way-and a lot of people ran with that in different directions.

David Grubbs Creep Mission Barnaby Smith, October 3rd, 2017 12:09. ed-academic David Grubbs invites us back into his playful, thoughtful world. Grubbs's own restless career, full of dualities, can be seen as charting its own unfamiliar nexus between disparate contexts and traditions. Because it is composition that Grubbs does. There aren't exactly many hooks on Creep Mission, his latest album and the follow-up to the equally engrossing Prismrose. That album featured vocals on just one track – Creep Mission features vocals on none.
