Supermodel of the World is the debut studio album by American drag queen RuPaul, released on June 8, 1993 by Tommy Boy Records. It is his second album overall, his first release being a soundtrack album. With the release of the Supermodel of the World album, RuPaul obtained higher celebrity status, notably due to the album's first single, "Supermodel (You Better Work)". Before the release of this album, he had done some modeling work as a drag queen, hence the album title.

Supermodel of the World. Released June 8, 1993. Supermodel of the World Tracklist. 1. Supermodel (You Better Work) Lyrics. About Supermodel of the World. This was the album that gained RuPaul mainstream success. Recorded at producer Eric Kupper’s house in Manhattan, RuPaul had already been immersed in the club scene for over a decade. He had just won the title Queen of Manhattan. When dance music group Deee-Lite made it big, RuPaul knew he had to act fast. He made a demo, shopped it around and Tommy Boy Records promptly signed him. He told Idolator: At the time lived right by where the World Trade towers were

Back when supermodels really did rule the world, RuPaul sashayed down his own rarefied runway: He went from New York nightlife celebrity to something beyond a drag queen lip-syncing other people’s songs for his life when he released his debut album, Supermodel of the World, 25 years ago on June 8, 1993. This was not an androgynous, sexually ambiguous artist like David Bowie, Boy George or Prince. Sixteen years before he shifted the culture with his reality-show competition RuPaul’s Drag Race, Ru was taking himself. By: RuPaul (1993, Electronic). 2. Miss Lady DJ. 3. Free Your Mind. 6. This was a fun way of getting to know RuPaul back before he was the drag queen superstar of today.

In honor of RuPaul’s groundbreaking efforts, I thought it was only appropriate to highlight the album which spawned three huge club hits. Supermodel (You Better Work) peaked at No. 45 on the Hot 100 and No. 2 on the dance chart. A Shade Shady (Now Prance) and Back to My Roots both reached the pole position on Billboard’s club chart. Imagine if the world didn’t fall in love with Ru name dropping supermodel names. We would’ve never known the marvel that is RuPaul’s Drag Race.
