Bitter Pill is the debut studio album of the Irish singer-songwriter Gavin James. It was released in Ireland on 20 November 2015 and its international release was on March 11, 2016. The album peaked at number 5 on the Irish Albums Chart and made it to number 52 on the UK Albums Chart. It also charted in the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Switzerland.

His first studio album refits many of those songs with sumptuousness and cinematic oomph. Thus Ghost ’s gentle melancholy is elevated on swirling strings, 22 is rebuilt into a stadium-ready piano ballad and the title track, debuted here, swells with hymnal drama. Sometimes, though, James’s pain-singed voice is enough by itself and the spare intimacy of Hole in My Heart is wisely preserved. Bitter Pill Gavin James. The excellent titular single Bitter Pill, with its ominous, Hozier-esque opening chords, sets the bar pretty high at the outset. Preparing for his conquest of America, the video features James driving a decidedly American-looking car around a decidedly American-looking city with a cast of warring couples in the backseat. Unfortunately nothing else on the album matches its quality in terms of composition or melody, which is not to say there are no other good songs. Rather they tend to blend together in a sugary smoothie which, unlike his Bitter Pill, is a little too easy to swallow. Doubtless this album will sell well and soundtrack adolescent heartbreak for many years to come. Hopefully album two will see Gavin James step outside his comfort zone and challenge himself, and us, a bit more, because this is all far too easy.
