The album followed shortly afterwards, and it didn't fail to deliver on the promise of the single. Not only did Coolio expand his sound, but his songwriting skills improved, as Gangsta's Paradise has very few weak moments. Alternating between slow, funky grooves and elastic, party-ready anthems, Gangsta's Paradise is proof that Coolio is one of the most exciting and interesting hip-hop artists of the mid-'90s.

As with most hip-hop, Gangsta's Paradise is a rip-off of someone else's music. In this case it's a variation of Ray Barretto's "Pastime Paradise" from 1982.

hey dude, you should never take me too seriously.....of course it's a HUGE exaggeration....and said very tongue-in-cheek. Do you think I honestly believe that "most hip-hop is a rip-off of someone else's music"? I found that statement very funny to write. I guess I should consider that others may not find this so amusing. Anyway, call it ignorant on many levels if you like. Enjoy your raps

This is an ignorant comment on many levels. To start with, "Pastime Paradise" is a Stevie Wonder song from 1976 of the album Songs in the Key of Life. What you call a "rip-off" is actually called a sample, and is part of what composes the instrumental track. Coolio's raps are completely original and are what take this song to a whole new level. This is one of the indisputably Classic songs in hip hop.
