Zazen Boys is a Japanese band formed by former Number Girl guitarist and vocalist Shutoku Mukai. Stylistically, their music consists mostly of complex rhythmic songs reminiscent of math rock, as well as extended improvisational songs during live performances. After the breakup of Number Girl, Shutoku Mukai began touring solo under the moniker Mukai Shutoku Acoustic and Electric.

Formed in the early '80s by composer/producer Rama, keyboardist Steve Kaplan and guitarist Joaquin Lievano, Zazen blend elements of Eastern philosophy and mythology with a hybrid of jazz and new age. The trio has released a series of records on the Miramar label, among them 1994's Enlightenment, 1995's Canyons of Light and 1997's Cayman Blue.

Often employing wordless choirs, he sometimes uses lyrics as in his album of Sacred Chant, Phos Hilaron, and his album GNOSIS, which utilizes Greek Orthodox Chanting. Garden of Delight is his most critically acclaimed recording to date having won awards for Best World Album of the Year and CD of the Month on Echoes.
