This Is Hardcore is the sixth album by English band Pulp, first released in March 1998. It came three years after their breakthrough album, Different Class, and was eagerly anticipated. In 2013, NME ranked it at number 166 in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. As with the band's previous album, Different Class, it reached No. 1 in the UK Albums Chart, and was well received critically, earning Pulp a third successive nomination for the 1998 Mercury Prize.

On the long-awaited sequel to Pulp's breakthrough album, Different Class, England's unofficial laureate Jarvis Cocker perfects his poetry of the prosaic. Just before the lights went down at the Radiohead show in London last November, a tall, thin, bespectacled man walked into the arena to take his seat. This Is Hardcore' is a remarkable record, an album that takes its narrator's abject decline and relates it with complete frankness. And the Jarvis interview in last month's Select made it abundantly clear that there's precious little separation between these songs and their author. But, if this is a record dealing with breakdown, it has none of rock's traditional dramatic glorification of mental and physical collapse.

The whole of Hardcore, in that way, plays like the unflinching anticlimax to Different Class; the amorous whimsy of Something Changed becomes the predictable relationship failure of TV Movie ; the psychedelic youth of Sorted for Es and Wizz become the desperate, ageing hedonists of Party Hard ; the potential of Disco 2000 becomes the mundanity and impotence of Dishes. But that’s why it’s all the more important to have a band like Pulp, and an album like This Is Hardcore, there to connect the uncomfortable dots between The Everyman and The Man. Cocker looked around and saw the individualism he eulogised cannibalise the collective action and social conscience it was supposed to give rise to.

Different Class is better than His n' Hers. That's the crux of the matter isn't it? It comes down to a fight between those two albums. Anyway His 'n' Hers is great. But Jarvis Cocker as a lyricist and more particularly as a cynic had yet to hit his stride. Now consider 'Different Class'. it's the same for everyone. It seduces the listener, like Mrs Robinson, slowly and over a course of time, growing with each play and with each birthday of the listener. While Nicky Wire may have hit out against the Mondeo man, This is Hardcore is an album for everyone who, suffocating in suburbia with the wife and kids box ticked, or living alone in an inner city box cupboard, pulls out of their drive and, on the way to their thankless job, wonders how the hell they got here; whether the popular kid.
More sophisticated than 1995's brilliant Different Class, This is Hardcore sees Pulp move into a more mature light. The basic themes of lust, rebellion and carefree frivolusness still permeate the album, but they are tackeled from different angles which showcase an aging frontman Jarvis Cocker confronting his demons and beginning to grasp his inadequateness as a father, husband and person. This is a highly introspective album for Cocker, and from the outside looking in it gives an interesting, at times disturbing, but all together engaging listen
