The Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5 of Johannes Brahms was written in 1853 and published the following year. The sonata is unusually large, consisting of five movements, as opposed to the traditional three or four. When he wrote this piano sonata, the genre was seen by many to be past its heyday. Brahms, enamored of Beethoven, composed Piano Sonata No. 3 with a masterful combination of free Romantic spirit and strict classical architecture.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Sonata N. 4 in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 2 "Moonlight" - Piano Sonata N. 7 in D Minor, Op. 31, No. 2 "Tempest" - Piano Sonata No. 21 in C Major, Op. 53 "Waldstein". 15 & Piano Concerto No. 4 In G Minor, Op. 58. Various Artists.

Frédéric Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35 was written mainly in 1839 at Nohant, near Châteauroux in France, though the third movement, the funeral march, had been composed as early as 1837. The finale contains a whirlwind of unremitting parallel octaves, with unvarying tempo and dynamics, and not a single rest or chord until the final bars. Arthur Rubinstein is said to have remarked that the fourth movement is the "wind howling around the gravestones". Miculi states, that Chopin afterwards wished the two measures in small notes to be omitted. The Sonata confused contemporary critics, who found it lacked cohesion. The sonata's opening bars allude to Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32, Op. 111, Beethoven's last.

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his Piano Sonata no. 17, Op. 31 no. 2, between the years 1801 and 1802. It is a work in three movements, in the key of D minor, and it is usually called by its nickname 'The Tempest' (Der Sturm). This name, though, does not come from Beethoven himself, nor was the sonata referred to as such during his lifetime. Instead, it comes from a claim by his associate Anton Schindler that the sonata was inspired by the homonymous Shakespeare play. Much of Schindler's information is distrusted.
