Broken Sky is the follow-up to Declan O’Donovan’s self-titled debut album, released in 2012. The sophomore release was recorded with Juno Award-winning producer Jean Massicotte (Patrick Watson, Adam Cohen, Lhasa) at Studio Masterkut in Montreal and features members of Patrick Watson including: Robbie Kuster, Mishka Stein, and Joe Grass; and Brad Barr from The Barr Brothers. All music was written while Declan was living between Whitehorse, Toronto, and Montreal from 2014 to 2016. Jean gave my songs a landscape to live in and explore, says O’Donovan.

In the album Broken Sky, Declan explored themes of contrast and counterpoint in his lyrics and in the production of the record. This recording of Let It Rain (Reprise) is the final counterpoint to this collection songs, offering up a dark and somewhat bruised take on a well-written and versatile song.

Declan O’Donovan is that songwriter and contemporary troubadour who utilizes a broad palate of voice and piano to tell intriguing stories through the music he creates. At home in the rural environs of Whitehorse, Yukon and equally at home in the urban centers of Montreal and Toronto, this broad sense of place comes into play in the songs Declan has written for his newest release, Broken Sky. Overall, the sound of the album strikes a balance between the rural and roots, and the urban and contemporary influences that contributed to the sound and the songwriting, says O’Donovan. Declan released Broken Sky on June 2nd and has been touring nationally and internationally in support throughout 2017.
