Victor Assis Brasil (born August 28, 1945; died 1981) was a Brazilian jazz saxophonist. He was the brother of classical pianist João Carlos Assis Brasil. He studied at Berklee College of Music and later taught improvisation technique in Brazil. He also toured on three continents. He is said to have been more popular outside Brazil than in it and his style was strongly influenced by non-Brazilian musicians.

December 6, 2017 In News. Hailed as one of the country’s greatest saxophonists of all time. Victor Assis Brasil’s 1970 LP Esperanto is being rereleased for the first time, by Far Out Recordings this February. The album features four original compositions plus a latin-jazz cover of Jimmy Heath’s ‘Ginger Bread Boy’, and boasting a band filled with Brazilian music greats including Dom Salvador (bass), Edison Machado (drums), Helio Delmiro (guitar) and Edson Lobo (Bass).

Victor Assis Brasil was the best Brazilian jazzman of his generation, having being praised by international critics. Brasil showed early evidence of talent for music, excelling at the harmonica and the drums. Also from that period are his albums Trajeto, Victor Assis Brasil Toca Jobim, Esperanto, Victor Assis Brasil Quinteto, and Pedrinho, his last one. His last three years of life were marked by noted international performances.

Brasil was a saxophonist in primis, and the best out out there at the time; Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim was one of his earlier albums, and it's striking to hear just how fluid and at the cutting-edge of jazz this man was in 1970. The opener "So Tinha De Sir Com Voce" is a delightfully subtle number, backed by intricate guitars and gentle pianos, while "Wave" heads down a deeper, more pensive tone with the man's sax on the front lines.
