Richard Youngs is a singular musician, for whom the description ‘unclassifiable’ comes in very handy. He has released an impossible number of albums over the last 25 years, and his collaboration list is a pocket guide to a persistent, shamanic strain of alternative British music. In the past he has been claimed for free folk and improv, and the press release for this latest album, Belief, cheerfully quotes The Wire’s tongue-in-cheek attempt to pin him down as the post-punk autodidact’s post-punk autodidact. Put simply, he does what he pleases, and he knows what he’s doing

Currently living in Glasgow (Scotland), Richard Youngs is a highly versatile and experimental artist. He has been releasing and performing music since the early 80s, either solo or with a collaborator - and more recently as part of prog revivalists ILK. His work ranges from the affecting Sapphie (a lament for his dog) to the strange humor of Lake (recorded over 3 days in 1990 with Simon Wickham-Smith).

Notes

Boredom of Poetry was once a short song on a CDR also called Boredom of Poetry that I released on No Fans Records NFR11 in 2006. The original song cycle was built on a thirly recorded improvisation of Appalachian dulcimer, cifteli, Thai harp and zither. These two longer pieces feature the same lo-fi recording layered with four further recordings made in different places at different times: a pro-studio drum freakout, a forgotten somewhat meditational session of unknown date, a failed attempt at a jazz album from a couple of months ago, and a harmonica/Casio pairing from last week.

Appalachian duclimer, cifteli, Thai harp and zither (Harpenden, 2006).
Drums (Cava Sound Workshop, Glasgow, before 2010).
Epinette des Vosges, sleighs and voice (Glasgow, before 2010).
Bass guitar, Casio, cymbals, drum machine, hand drum, harmonica and shakuhachi (Glasgow, 2016).

Photograph (unknown place, 2015)
