The turn to D major at the end of the finale is utterly delightful in the hands of Abbado and Argerich, not a Romantic conceit like sunlight breaking through storm clouds but a quintessentially ingenious Mozartian ornament. The Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major, K. 503, Mozart's longest concerto, offers a lot to chew on, with the framework of the vast first movement and its almost neutral thematic material developed in large motions. The live sound is impressively clear, and in general this is a marvelous statement from the last months of a great conductor's life.

20 & 25: Argerich/Orchestra Mozart/Abbado. The great Claudio Abbado's final recording is the Album of the Weekend, 22-23 March 2014. The first new release for ten years from Martha Argerich and Claudio Abbado was their first ever album of concertos by Mozart and the final recording made by Abbado before his recent death. Recorded at concert performances at last year's Lucerne Festival, the legendary pianist and conductor have now added the music of Mozart to their multi award-winning discography of concertos by Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Ravel, Prokofiev, Beethoven and Liszt. Both concertos are ably supported by Abbado’s Orchestra Mozart, now deprived of their founder and conductor. The performances here are superlative, with a master soloist and conductor bringing every sublime subtlety of Mozart's music vividly to light.

A disc of Mozart piano concertos recorded in concert by Martha Argerich with Claudio Abbado and Orchestra Mozart was always going to be a delicious prospect. Hearing of Abbado’s death as I write these words turns the pleasure of hearing it into something altogether more bittersweet. Lucky were those souls who heard these performances of the D minor Concerto, K466, and the C major Concerto, K503, at the Lucerne Festival last March – an experience denied London audiences a few months later when first the ailing Abbado and then Argerich cancelled their appearances.
