ProgHog231 It's great to see an increasing number of classic metal releases on Bandcamp, along with all the great new bands. This first album (well, second if you count Abominations of Desolation) isn't as mature as Covenant or Domination, but all the hallmarks are there. Trey Azagthoth and Pete Sandoval nail it.
Morbid Angel - Altars Of Madness (1989).
Few albums struck a chord within the ears and minds of the late-'80s underground metal scene like Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness did at the end of the decade, setting a new precedent for metal bands to reach. With the arguable exception of Chuck Schuldiner's Death, never before had a heavy metal band carried their lightning-fast guitar riffs and equally spellbinding guitar solos into such horrific territory

Morbid Angel's debut album Altars of Madness helped lay the groundwork for what we now call "old school" death metal. This album is an onslaught of evil, growled and satanic vocals, chaotic guitar leads and insane blast sections. If someone had asked me to summarize death metal with one album, I'd show them this. A great example is the track "Maze of Torment", the intro guitar riff is enough to have me head banging as it along with the drums have a unique and groovy rhythm. But don't get me wrong, there is a ton of great blasting and fast guitar playing on this album, I just love how Morbid Angel is able to keep the mid tempo parts eerie and interesting. The guitar sound is highly distorted and has a screeching sound during the plenitude of wailing guitar solos
Altars of Madness is Morbid Angel's debut album and is a milestone in the history of death metal. The remastered version (released in 2003) includes several remixed versions of songs from the album. 2006 saw a dual-disc release with the 2003 remaster on the audio side and 'Live Madness 89' recorded at Nottingham Rock City on the 14th of November 1989 on the DVD side. In the album's liner notes, the band dedicates the album to the underground and to speed, death, and black metal fans everywhere. The cover artwork represents the different moods of humans.
