Hank Ballard was one of the most influential R&B artists of the 1950s - it’s difficult to imagine a James Brown or even an Otis Redding without the raw and rough-edged template that Ballard and his group the Midnighters provided - so it’s a little surprising that this two-disc set is the first time that. all of Ballard's singles released between 1954 and 1959, both A- and B-sides, have been collected in one package

After the Midnighters disbanded, Ballard launched a solo career. His 1968 single, "How You Gonna Get Respect (When You Haven't Cut Your Process Yet)", was his biggest post-Midnighters hit, peaking at number 15 on the R&B chart. James Brown produced Ballard's 1969 album You Can't Keep a Good Man Down.

The Midnighters were an American R&B group from Detroit, Michigan. They were an influential group in the 1950s and early 1960s, with many R&B hit records. They were also notable for launching the career of lead singer Hank Ballard and the worldwide dance craze the Twist. Between 1953 and 1962 the Midnighters had almost two dozen hits on the . Pop & R&B charts.
