M83's second album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts followed in spring 2003 (and summer 2004 in North America) to widespread critical acclaim. After worldwide touring for Dead Cities resumed, Nicolas Fromageau left the band and formed the band Team Ghost in 2009. Gonzalez returned to the studio to record the group's third studio album, Before the Dawn Heals Us, which was released in January 2005. The same year, M83 provided a remix of "The Pioneers" by Bloc Party, which was also included on Bloc Party's remix album Silent Alarm Remixed.

This is an album for the devoted M83 fan, but Post-Rock music hunters should pass on this effort in favor of the band's first three albums. The final verdict for me is "Digital Shades, Vol. 1" is an interesting work of ambient mood music, which further extends the range of this remarkable Dream-Pop band. I approached this new M83 disc with a little trepidation. The title and barely promoted release smacks of a mix album along the lines of "Late Night Tales. Don't let that dissuade you as "Digital Shades Vol. 1" is in fact a proper album. Additionally, the word that did get out on this album stressed the ambient nature of it.

The album is the first from Anthony Gonzalez’s project since 2011’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, which according to recent reports is going to be epic. According to an interview last year, Gonzalez confirmed the album features a narrative thread influenced by ’80s TV shows Who’s The Boss and Punky Brewster. As Pitchfork reports, Junk is released through Mute on April 8 and will be supported with a global tour that includes a new female keyboardist, found as part of an open call.
