I Am the Messiah is the only album by MC Honky, released in 2002. Supposedly a middle-age disc jockey from Silverlake, California, MC Honky is promoted by, and widely considered to be, Mark Oliver Everett (or "E") of Eels. To support the album, an actor would open Eels shows as Honky, to "prove" that he and E were two separate persons. E and MC Honky also engaged in a comic feud on the Internet, in which E hoped MC Honky would catch SARS. The creator of the MC Honky artwork and videos is Ivan Brunetti.

Hiding behind a thin veil of anonymity, MC Honky claims to be a fifty-something baby boomer who used to be a janitor, a studio engineer, and even a potter, who has turned to mixing music. Regardless of Honky's identity or rather suspect story, I Am the Messiah is a mixing experiment that's - at times - wildly creative and marvelously intoxicating. Cleverly constructing songs around snippets of vinyl artifacts, Honky also combines funky exotica, killer breakbeats, and a quirky educational filmstrip aesthetic that never takes itself seriously.

While MC Honky's origins lie in the playful fringes of alt rock, I Am the Messiah crosses over into downright goofiness. Mixing post-big beat dance with cocktail lounge-style clichés, Honky (an nom de plume for a veteran recording artist) manages both the anything-goes spirit of Beck and the weird science of Esquivel. None of it is remotely serious and occasionally becomes tiresome in its overzealous drive to be clever. While MC Honky's debut album doesn't stray too far from the elastic boundaries already put in place for legitimate Eels releases, it does stretch them quite a bit. One notable difference here though is the near absence of E's vocals. especially after the massive processing that's been applied to the vocals. Where I Am the Messiah succeeds is in it's overall quirkiness

Eels frontman E is to release a solo album under the name MC HONKY. I Am The Messiah’ is released on March 10 through B-Unique. The star’s cartoon alter ego can be seen in the pic on the right. The self-produced LP was recorded in LA, and other guests on the record include REM drummer Joey Waronker and Eels drummer Butch. The tracklisting is: ‘Sonnet No. 3’. ‘Hung Up’. ‘The Object’.
