Mann's music was still based on the Latin jazz that he had spent years exploring, but rather than the frenetic beats of Afro-Cuban music or samba, the rhythmic pulse of these five tracks is decidedly more laid-back. On the centerpiece eight-minute rendition of the gospel standard "Motherless Child," the vibe is straight-up soul jazz, complete with some bluesy comping by Corea and a long, mellow flute solo by Mann.

The Village Gate was a nightclub at the corner of Thompson and Bleecker Streets in Greenwich Village, New York. Art D'Lugoff opened the club in 1958, on the ground floor and basement of 160 Bleecker Street. The large 1896 Chicago School structure by architect Ernest Flagg was known at the time as Mills House No. 1 and served as a flophouse for transient men. In its heyday, the Village Gate also included an upper-story performance space, known as the Top of the Gate

The album follows Mann's two previously released recordings from the venue five years earlier Herbie Mann at the Village. Mann played flutes on the Bee Gees' album Spirits Having Flown. His last appearance was on May 3, 2003, at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and he died less than two months on July 1, 2003, at the age of 73, after a long battle with prostate cancer, he died in his home in Pecos, New Mexico, leaving his wife, Susan Janeal Arison, four children: Paul Mann, Claudia Mann, Laura Mann-Lepik.
