Pacific Breeze: Japanese City Pop, AOR and Boogie 1976–1986 is a 2019 compilation album. The album was released by Light in the Attic Records on May 3, 2019, as the third part of their Japan Archival Series, starting with Even a Tree Can Shed Tears: Japanese Folk & Rock 1969–1973. Pacific Breeze: Japanese City Pop, AOR and Boogie 1976–1986 was part of the American Light in the Attic Records labels reissuing of Japanese music.

Originally found on 1982’s Philharmony, Hosono’s first solo album following YMO’s rise, the song is fueled by a vaguely flute-y sample that loops in an endless cheerful tootle and the musician’s own sneering anxieties over not being fit enough for a very sporty crush. It’s the one moment on Pacific Breeze where the cracks of the city pop fantasy really start to show-the dark side of a genre associated with, essentially, yuppies in Tokyo.

Sony acquired Columbia and its various subsidiaries in the late '80s, purchasing one of the richest catalogs in pop history, as the box set proves again and again. Even so, the scope of the 38-track Pop Music: The Modern Era 1976-1999 is impressive. Beginning with Aerosmith's "Dream On" and ending with Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)," the collection covers a huge amount of ground, featuring not just major artists, but era-defining one-hit wonders.
