Chthe'ilist certainly does a great job on Le Dernier Crépuscule. Their music is on one hand a huge worship of the old Finnish death metal scene, with bands like Disgrace, Funebre, Thergothon, Adramelech and Demilich, but also for bands from other countries like old Therion, Carbonized, Grave, Vital Remains and Morbid Angel. Le dernier crépuscule album still bears the stench of Finnish death metal, mind you. Tougas has made its influence very evident in interviews, but what I hear on this album sounds more like the thick groove of Demigod or Convulse combined with a sense of dissonance not unlike Gorguts.

Though the band’s Demilich-isms are by far the most memorable parts of this album, the doom-laden, less overtly strange riffs in the bridge of Scriptures of the Typhlodians are no less effective at sending your head straight off your neck. Voices From Beneath the Well is outclassed in riffs by the surrounding material, but its flashy bass playing makes for a compelling listen nonetheless, guiding the guitars through a swampy six minutes of odd-timed groove. Low points are few and far between for this album, but issues aren’t absent – just well-cloaked.

Le Dernier Crépuscule is a bruiser of a modern death metal record. Everything from the dreary cover to the thick production lends itself to a fascinating piece of metal. The hypnotic mess of guitar and bass reverberate heavily among the abyssal production, leaving the vocals to sound suitably obscured and menacing. These little flourishes and details that give the album so much personality and atmosphere are not over done. No, the band avoids the cheese factor.
