English conductor Richard Hickox leads his City of London Sinfonia in a 1992 recording of Francis Poulenc's two major sacred works for soprano, choir and orchestra, the Stabat Mater (1950) and the Gloria (1959). The performers also include the 10-minute-long Litanies to the Black Virgin, dating from 1936, when Poulenc was turning to religion in response to a personal tragedy. A complex composer by any measure, Poulenc used different styles for different genres.
