GOOD: North of a Miracle is one of those LPs that stand the test of time. Over the years, I've owned seven different copies; it has been several years since I was last without a copy of one sort or another in my collection. Nick's first album from back in 1983 gets a lovingly restored reissue. Published on September 15, 2005.
Sound - 8 Ah, Nick Heyward. The next track that follows sounds, oddly like 'Love Plus One'. Or maybe that's just the marimba. Lyrics - 7 Heyward was always one for heartfelt lyrics. Please, my girl, release the story of love' and 'I was so sensitive' show the romantic, sissy side of the singer-songwriter, while the Cyndi Lauper-esque guitar lines makes up for the lyrics that recall a middle school romance.
Album by Nick Heyward. When It Started to Begin. Blue Hat for a Blue Day. Take That Situation. Whistle Down the Wind. Club Boy at Sea. The Kick of Love. The Day It Rained Forever. Bonus tracks on 2001 reissue. Whistle Down the Wind (12" version). Take That Situation (rhythm mix).
One track already makes Nick Heyward's first solo LP after leaving Haircut 100 a must-hear. The breezy "Whistle Down the Wind" is among Heyward's most moving songs, a story of unrequited love with a "hello, hello, hope you're feeling fine" chorus that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Heyward sings the opening lines in a whispery tone, caressing the ears with the sweetness of his voice; when the tempo builds up, the track manages to simultaneously elevate and sadden the listener. Like the Colourfield's Virgins & Philistines, North of a Miracle doesn't seem like a '80s record; its apparent influences - the Beatles, the Walker Brothers, jazz, R&B - are as timeless as the album. Anybody expecting a boyish romp like Haircut 100's "Love Plus One" might be a tad startled. 1 When It Started to Begin Nick Heyward 3:48.
