VU is an outtakes compilation album by the Velvet Underground. It was released in February 1985 by Verve Records. When the Velvet Underground moved from Verve Records (who had released their first two albums) to parent company MGM Records, they signed a two-album deal, releasing their third and eponymous album The Velvet Underground in March 1969. Later that same year there was a management change and MGM Records' new CEO, Mike Curb, was brought in to try to rescue the financially struggling label

The Velvet Underground (album). The Velvet Underground is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released in March 1969, it was their first record with Doug Yule, who was a replacement for John Cale. Recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California, the album's sound-consisting largely of ballads and straightforward rock songs-marked a notable shift in style from the band's previous recordings.

VU is an outtakes album compiled by Verve Records in 1985. The record substantially consists of songs recorded during the sessions for The Velvet Underground’s fourth album, which was never released. After the financial failure of The Velvet Underground, MGM Records dropped the act from their roster and the album, fully recorded, was thrown into the MGM vaults to languish unheard in obscurity. Most of these songs were never recorded again by the Velvet Underground – the ones that did were never actually included on a studio album again. However, Lou Reed re-recorded quite a few of them for use in several of his solo albums in the 1970s.
