I think of this album as an example of what people are talking about when they say that Davis' Kind of Blue LP was off-speed on the A-side until Sony corrected it in the 90s. Benson's version of "So What" and Grant Green's version from Sunday Mornin' both sound a bit too fast for someone who has really only ever heard the "corrected" Kind of Blue. I begin to think that Sony was earnest when they claimed to have discovered and fixed this error. That said, Benson kills it anyway, too fast or not.

George Benson's Beyond the Blue Horizon (1971) his label debut with CTI is "one of Benson s best records, with 'So What?' and 'The Gentle Rain'. lyrical but quite hard-bitten, and with an excellent rhythm section behind him, Benson finds room to stretch out" (The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings). com calls it " superb jazz session. a must-hear for all aficionados of Benson s guitar.

Beyond the Blue Horizon" is a 1930 song composed by Leo Robin, Richard A. Whiting, and W. Franke Harling, and was first performed by Jeanette MacDonald in the 1930 film Monte Carlo. It was released B-side that November as a single on a 78 rpm disc along with the song "Always, in All Ways" under the RCA Red Seal label. Four takes were recorded on August 4 at the Hollywood Recording Studio, conducted by LeRoy Shield, with MacDonald and the vocal group The Rounders; the second take was chosen for release.

Beyond the Blue Horizon is a post-bop masterpiece. This is an album rife with bluesy jazzy licks, mellow organ lines(courtesy of Clarence Palmer), and of course, Ron in Carter. Jack DeJohnette also throws down some hard ass drum fills, and occasionally exotic conga beats. So What - . /5 Benson kicks off the album with a harder, up-tempo version of the classic Miles Davis track. George Benson plays some of his best on this track, with his warm, round, and slightly distorted sound. There are some ingenious internal chord progressions(improvised of course) from Benson, and he displays his masterful knowledge of chordal improv, throwing in fractured chords that beautifully bring out the distortion in the guitar. Ode to a Kudu - . /5 This is Benson's mellowest and gentlest track. It plays like a poetic ode.
