Description

Beautifully-shot documentary on Pandit Pran Nath, directed by William Farley, 1986. With Terry Riley, La Monte Young & Marian Zazeela.

Pandit Pran Nath (Devanagari: पंडित प्राणनाथ) (3 November 1918 – 13 June 1996) was a Hindustani classical singer and teacher of the Kirana Gharana (school). Pran Nath was born into a wealthy family in Lahore in present-day Pakistan. While avid devotees of music (inviting musicians into the house to perform nightly), the family did not approve of his desire to become a musician, so he left home at the age of 13 and took up residence with legendary (but reclusive) singer Abdul Wahid Khan of the Kirana gharana, cousin of the more widely known Abdul Karim Khan.

Pandit Pran Nath's appearance is made possible with the cooperation of the Kirana Center for Indian Classical Music, a program of the MELA Foundation, In. New York. Other Versions (1 of 1) View All. Cat.

Produced in 1986 but unreleased until thirteen years later, filmmaker William Farley's documentary traces the remarkable career of influential Indian vocalist Pandit Pran Nath, whose unique style of singing can be traced back to the 13th Century. An influential figure to lovers of Indian classical music and American avant-garde musicians alike, Pandit Pran Nath inspired such composers as La Monte Young and Terry Riley to explore exciting new sonic realms.

And there are sine waves playing at all sorts of minute gradations in between 440 and 441. The whole sound spectrum, audible and inaudible, is all obliviously occurring, all the time, in the ether. Yet, for many Minimalists, the appeal is in a certain compromise, the ability to mix culture and artistry with infinity and eternity. Draw a line from John Cale to Alan Licht and you have a strain of minimalism that deals with living in New York City as much as it deals with religiosity and transcendence. Perhaps nowhere is this more true than on The Tamburas of Pandit Pran Nath, a one 74-minute tambura drone performed solely by Young and long-time partner, Marian Zazeela. Like Young's other work, this exists in its own precious universe, a controlled environment, carefully meted-out to the public according to Young's uncompromising standards.

Pran Nath served Khan for seven years before he was accepted as a student, and stayed with Khan for nearly two decades. Both guru and disciple were much attracted to mysticism: Abdul. 1986 - In Between the Notes: A Portrait of Pandit Pran Nath. Directed by William Farley. On Pandit Pran Nath by Henry Flynt.
