The most notable change, however, came with the hiring of Todd Rundgren to produce the band's eighth album. Rundgren, a pop/rock artist in his own right, was also known for his producing abilities, and he gave Grand Funk exactly what they were looking for: We're an American Band sounded nothing like its muddy, plodding predecessors. Sonically, the record was sharp and detailed and the band's playing was far tighter and more accomplished.
MX-80's press packet enticed me. It spoke of a band that was helmed by a maniacal t-garde-jazz guitarist named Bruce Anderson, who had allegedly inspired Thurston Moore. The band's seemingly illustrious career even yielded an extensive collection with liner notes by reputed music writer/notorious record collector Byron Coley. One listen to the album included with the press packet made me never want to delve into their back catalog. The album, We're an American Band, is disastrous. It is not only pointless, but it might squelch the band's ability to find.
Steeler (American band album). Steeler is the debut studio album by the American heavy metal band of the same name, released in 1983. It was largely recorded at Prairie Sun Studios in Cotati, California, about fifty miles north of San Francisco. It was the only album released by the band until a 2005 compilation album released by singer Ron Keel.
We're an American Band" (from the album of the same name) became Grand Funk Railroad's first No. 1 single released July 2, 1973. Written by Don Brewer and produced by Todd Rundgren, its huge chart success broadened Grand Funk's appeal. It was sung by drummer Don Brewer who began doing more lead vocals for the band and helped with their transition to making top 40 hits. The band Americade covered it for their 1982 album release American Metal and the corresponding video won "Best New Video" (one of six nominated summer rock videos) on MTV (July 3 and 4, 1983--announced by Lindsay Buckingham and VJ Alan Hunter). The German band Spider Murphy Gang published a musically identical German (Bavarian) version as a single in 1983. The song was also featured on their 1983 album Live! as well as on their Greatest Hits (1986).
MX-80, aka MX-80 Sound, is a post-metal art band that originated in Bloomington, Indiana in 1974 . MX-80 made it on to Colbert (with Rob Riggle) last week. We are proud of our vinyl reissues of MX-80 Sound's Out of the Tunnel and Crowd Control. fresher?) as they did in 1980 and 1981.
