Grant died nearly seven years later, in January 1979. Today, Guitar World presents the exclusive premiere of "Medley," one of the absolute highlights of Slick! Live at Oil Can Harry's. Taped three years after the 1972 Blue Note classic Live at the Lighthouse, this marks the latest known official live Green recording on CD/LP. Besides Grant on guitar, the band featured Emmanuel Riggins (electric piano), Ronnie Ware (bass), Greg Vibrations Williams (drums) and Gerald Izzard (percussion).

Guitarist Grant Green (1935-1979) fell from favour with the jazz critics when he began playing funk in the late 1960s. But, perversely, it was exactly this departure which triggered the resuscitation of his reputation when, starting in the 1980s, rap artists began to ransack the funk catalogue for their samples. Slick is only marginally less lavish, a double album recorded in Vancouver on 5 September 1975. It opens with a cheekily swinging version of Charlie Parker’s Now’s the Time that provides Grant Green with plenty of opportunities to flaunt his bebop chops. He plays fluidly and adroitly, digging down into the tune and maintaining a bouncing tempo with the help of a tight rhythm section - Emmanuel Riggins on electric piano, Ronnie Ware bass, Greg Williams drums, Gerald Izzard percussion.

In an era often belittled by jazz fans, guitarist Grant Green spearheaded a movement that expanded hits in innovative ways. Yet Green was a masterly player and composer who was uniquely diverse in his range of styles. Some of Green’s best work was revealed after his death. To Read the Full Story.

Grant Green: Slick! Live at Oil Can Harry’s. Resonance HCD2034 Format: CD. Musical Performance. In 1970 Green released Alive!, his first live album as a leader. In 1972, Live at the Lighthouse affirmed that Green’s best music from this period took place in front of an audience, a fact further reinforced in 2006, when Blue Note released Live at Club Mozambique, a 1971 performance at a club in Detroit. Green appeared with a quintet at Oil Can Harry’s in Vancouver, Canada, on September 5, 1975, and radio station CHQM recorded the show for broadcast a week later. Luckily, Gary Barclay, host of The All-Night Jazz Show, kept the tapes, and Resonance has now released Green’s set as Slick! Live at Oil Can Harry’s. Green opens with Charlie Parker’s Now’s the Time, and even Emmanuel Riggins’s electric piano doesn’t pull the song into funk.
