High Tide made their first recordings as the backing band on Denny Gerrard's album Sinister Morning. Gerrard returned the favor by producing their first album, Sea Shanties, which was released in October 1969 . The first retrospective release, Precious Cargo, consists of sessions recorded in 1970 by the original group, but their exact nature is not specified. It has been theorized, however, that they are the rehearsal sessions for their unfinished third album. One song, "The Great Universal Protection Racket"(mislabeled on the album as "Exploration"), had been recorded for Sea Shanties but went unreleased at the time due to space constraints. None of the other six songs were used in any earlier recordings.
High Tide was a highly underrated British band that played psychedelic progressive rock when the genre was in its infancy. Their albums 'Sea Shanties' and 'High Tide' (1969 and 1970) are the stuff of legends. Precious Cargo', first released in 1990, offers seven tracks of live-in-the-studio acivity, resulting in hauntingly beautiful, yet terrifying soundscapes. This Reissue comes with a gatefold cover and two photocards. Precious Cargo is seven tracks of live-in-the- studio slices of hauntingly beautiful yet terrifying soundscapes. Their sound is one that should have been playing in the background of an Alfred Hitchcock film or more recently, a Wes Craven production comes to mind. What made their sound so eerie was the violin of Simon House.

This album is another in a very long list of progressive rock recordings from the early seventies that lay gathering dust in a vault somewhere over the decades it took for the rest of the music world to catch up. Recorded as a live jam in the studio shortly before the band dissolved in 1970, ‘Precious Cargo’ was not released (as far as I know) until violinist Simon House and guitarist Tony Hill resurrected the High Tide name and recorded ‘Interesting Times’ in the late eighties.
High Tide is the second album by High Tide. The album is slightly less heavy, with folk-influences within the band's sound. Though guitarist Tony Hill would later record with a new band under the High Tide banner, as well as releasing posthumous compilations of demos, this was the last proper album by the original group.
