The concept of Sia's new album, This Is Acting, feels like a watershed in the public's growing ­awareness of the way pop sausage gets made today: The idea is that every song (save one) was originally meant for another artist, who passed. The bad news is that with the five songs that follow,This Is Acting actually starts sounding like the scrap heap. Sia has admitted with refreshing honesty that she writes songs by playing Mad Libs with lists of phrases she stores on her phone; the worst case here is "House on Fire," in which she sings, "I'm a house on fire, and I want to keep burning," over what sounds like bad video-game music. Despite a few highlights, This Is Acting is scattered and forgettable next to the emotional 1000 Forms of Fear. Yes, Sia is upfront that it's more impersonal.

This Is Acting is the seventh studio album by Sia. The album was released on January 29, 2016. Most songs on the album were written by Sia for other artists that rejected them and Sia eventually recorded herself. In December 2014, Sia told SPIN that she had "two completed and ready to go" and wanted "2015 to look like it's been fucked. She first revealed the details of the album in an interview with NME published in February 2015

Going into her seventh album, Sia Furler wanted to try an experiment. She would record self-written tracks already pitched to but rejected by A-listers. I feel like they’re hits, but nobody wanted them, she said. This Is Acting dives headfirst into pop’s waters but its bold and beguiling songs retain their author’s earthy edge

Sia performs the rest of the songs with the conviction of a seasoned pro: Despite some sophomoric party-girl lyrics, the reggae-hued Cheap Thrills is the album’s most obvious ascendant of Chandelier, Sia’s vocals affecting a subtle patois and Greg Kurstin’s production smartly letting the groove do most of the work.
