Die Harke Und Der Spaten - About The Love Life Of The Garden Tools. Sven-Åke Johansson (Mariestad, Sweden, 1943) is a composer, a drummer, a poet, an author and also a visual artist. Longtime collaborator of the free improv scene back in the German sixties with Peter Kowald and Peter Brötzmann, furthermore with Manfred Schoof, Schlippenbach, Rüdiger Carl and Hans Reichel. He contributed to numerous exhibitions, publications and more than fourty recordings. He also produced radioplays for several German radio stations.

Phillips is an Australian composer and pianist working in the contexts of classical, experimental, and improvisational music. Johansson is a Swedish percussionist and performer in the circles of fine arts, new music, and free improvisation. Both live and work in Berlin. Simon arrived in my studio with songs by Jean Sibelius to try out. However, being bad at singing from sheet music, I wasn't quite able to perform them as intended. Somewhat surreally (or even alarmingly), Sven-Åke Johansson’s Die Harke und der Spaten (or, The Rake and the Spade) is a musical stage play about the love life of garden tools! It is a piece for one singer/speaker plus a musical ensemble. During a performance, the two tools are presented on stage in eight different positions that serve as the starting points for the scenes, until the ninth position is a handle with a rake and spade at its two ends, representing the offspring. The music is a composed-improvised piece of five parts, here featured in a version recorded in Malmö in 1998.
